Frequently Asked Questions
Can tourists from outside Germany buy a BahnCard? ▼
Yes, absolutely. Any person regardless of nationality or residence can purchase a BahnCard on bahn.de or at any DB ticket machine or travel centre. You don't need a German address or German bank account – international credit cards are accepted online.
What is the Probe BahnCard and is it good for short-term visitors? ▼
The Probe BahnCard 25 costs just €19.90 and is valid for 3 months. After 3 months it automatically converts to a full annual BahnCard (€62.90) unless you cancel it in writing. For tourists staying up to 3 months it's a great low-risk option – just remember to cancel before the trial ends. The Probe BahnCard 50 costs €39.90 for 3 months.
Does the BahnCard 25 discount apply to cheap Sparpreis tickets? ▼
Yes! BahnCard 25 gives you 25% off both Sparpreis and Flexpreis tickets. BahnCard 50 gives 50% off Flexpreis but only 25% off Sparpreis. For advance Sparpreis bookings, BahnCard 50 offers the same saving as BahnCard 25 – making BC 50 very hard to justify for short-stay visitors.
What's the best option for touring Germany by regional train? ▼
The Deutschlandticket (€58/month) gives unlimited travel on all regional trains, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, buses and trams. Important: it does NOT cover ICE, IC or EC long-distance trains.
I have a severe disability – what BahnCard options do I have? ▼
Passengers with a German Schwerbehindertenausweis (GdB ≥ 70) may qualify for a heavily discounted or free BahnCard. International visitors: contact DB Mobility Service at +49 30 65 21 28 88 (Mon–Fri 8am–8pm).
I'm only staying a few days – is there any discount card worth buying? ▼
For stays under 7 days, a BahnCard rarely pays off. Best strategies: book Sparpreis tickets early, use the DB Navigator app to compare prices, and check group fares if travelling with others.
I'm staying 6+ months – should I get a BahnCard 25 or BahnCard 50? ▼
BahnCard 25 (€62.90/year) saves 25% on all tickets and pays off after roughly €252 of rail spend. BahnCard 50 (€244/year) saves 50% on Flexpreis – it pays off if you spend about €488/year on flexible fares. For 6–12 month stays with regular long-distance travel, BahnCard 50 is usually the better deal. For regional-only travel, consider pairing BahnCard 25 with a Deutschlandticket (€58/month).
Can I cancel my BahnCard before the year is up? ▼
A standard BahnCard runs for 12 months and auto-renews unless you cancel in writing at least 6 weeks before renewal. Cancellation can be done via your bahn.de account. The Probe BahnCard must be cancelled before the 3-month trial ends. Always set a calendar reminder when you purchase.
